ITTF tourney: Egypt beat Nigeria
Hosts
Egypt held on to their superiority in African table tennis on Sunday
when they defeated Nigeria to win gold in the men and women’s team
events at the ongoing International Table Tennis Federation Africa
Senior championships in Cairo.
In the women’s event final, the Egyptian
team came from 2-0 down to defeat Nigeria 3-2, while Quadri Aruna’s
prowess could not save Nigeria from losing 3-2 to the Egyptians in the
men’s event.
ITTF Player of the Year, Aruna, remains
unbeaten at the championships as he defeated Egypt’s best players
El-Sayed Lashin and Omar Assar before the North Africans eventually won
the duel.
Egypt still dominate with two golds,
while the winners of the third medal will be determined when the final
of the mixed doubles against Congo Brazzaville is concluded on Tuesday
(today).
After Monday was observed as rest day for
the teams, the tournament will resume today with individual events in
singles and doubles.
Four more titles are still at stake in the tournament before it ends on January 29.
Over 17 countries are taking part in the
competition which serves as qualification for the World Championships in
China in April.
