Gunshots boomed again in Monguno, Borno State on Monday as   troops, backed by fighter jets, launched a major offensive to recapture the city from militant islamist sect, Boko Haram.
“The operation resumed on Monguno this (Monday) morning through air bombardment to dislodge the insurgents,” a Defence Headquarters source told Reuters news agency.
The source made this known as the death toll from the foiled bid by the sect to capture Maiduguri is believed to have risen from 65 to 100.
The sect had launched   simultaneous attacks on   Maiduguri, Monguno, Kodunga and Gubio on Sunday. While its fighters were repelled in Maiduguri, Gubio and Kodunga, they overran Monguno after soldiers who   engaged them in gun battle retreated.
A   military barracks in the city was seized and   the Brigade commander wounded by the insurgents.
The Defence Headquarters,   in one of its tweets on Monday,   said   the troops inflicted more casualties on fleeing insurgents while military locations in Maiduguri and Konduga were reinforced.
It   further stated that the troops captured a large number of heavy military hardware from the insurgents.
The tweet read, “Our forces recorded some casualties. Meanwhile, ground troops are in charge and Air Force patrol on going at Maiduguri and Konduga.
“Substantial amount of heavy weapons have been captured   as more terrorists died in the fight which lasted till early Monday morning.”
5,000 flee to Maiduguri
The National Emergency Management Agency Information Officer in the North-East, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, told The PUNCH, that 5,000 persons that fled the captured town had been registered in Maiduguri.
He said that the Borno State Government provided an almost completed housing estate   for the IDPs.
Ibrahim explained that 2,000 of them arrived the state capital on Sunday and 3,000 on Monday.
He said, “We are expecting more people;   we have put the needed materials for   them to settle well in the camp.”
Reuters also reported   that majority of those killed in the Maiduguri fighting were Boko Haram members.
It said that a Maiduguri-based journalist, Bello Dukku, who visited a mortuary in the city counted 100 bodies, including 15   soldiers.
According to Dukku, 50 people   injured in the fighting.
Meanwhile, the   curfew imposed on Maiduguri after the Sunday attack has been lifted.
A   spokesman for the Army in the state, Col. Sani Usman, said, “The curfew   has been lifted.   People can go about their legitimate business.”
The state Governor,   Kashim Shettima,   had earlier on Monday explained to the residents of the city that the curfew was imposed “to enable security personnel to carry out their operations.”
He said, “I call on the people of Borno State not to panic. This is our land. No fear, no flight, no retreat. We should not flee. We have a history dating back 1,000 years and I swear by Allah, we are going to subdue them (Boko Haram).”
The governor, who   also described the attack on Monguno as bad, said, “ I will not lie to you. People are trooping to Maiduguri. They are being protected by the military outside the city.
“There is a need for screening before they are allowed in.”
Meanwhile, an A online news medium, TheCable, said in its report on Monday that   the insurgents   attacked Michika, in Adamawa State, “killing people and burning houses”.
It quoted a   a source as having said that the terrorists arrived in the town at about 2pm on Monday “firing gunshots indiscriminately and   burning houses.”
“People who are running, trying to escape but are being shot. The soldiers are engaging them(insurgents) right now and I hope they overcome them,” he added.

GURU POINTS: Nigerien kidnappers demand $100,000 for Ogun schoolgirl

Nigerien kidnappers demand $100,000 for Ogun schoolgirl

Precious Okoro
A Niger Republic-based kidnapping syndicate has demanded the payment of $100, 000 as ransom for the release of its 15-year-old victim, Precious Okoro.
The victim’s father, Nwaigwe, explained that Precious was kidnapped around Songotedo, in the Ajah area of Lagos State, where she had boarded a commercial vehicle en route to her school in Ikenne, Ogun State.
He said he never knew his daughter had been abducted until two weeks later when the school management contacted him to say Precious had not reported in school.
He explained that he reported the matter to the police at the Ajah Police Division, where he was asked to exercise patience. He said the cops initially thought she fled to a boyfriend’s house.
Nwaigwe, a trader, said he was later contacted by the kidnappers, who informed him that his daughter was in Niamey, the Niger Republic capital.
He said, “My daughter, who was on holiday, was returning to her school in Ikenne Communty College, Ikene, Ogun State. On Sunday, May 25, 2014, she boarded a bus at the motor park in my presence and I bid her farewell.
“I thought she was already in school until the principal called me and said the school was about writing exams and nobody knew her whereabouts.
“I quickly informed the police at Ajah, and the Divisional Police Officer told me to be calm and wait because it was possible she went to a boyfriend’s house and they probably wanted to fleece me.
“One fateful morning in August, I saw an international line and the kidnappers said they were calling from Niamey in the Niger Republic, adding that if I wanted to see my daughter alive, I should pay them $100,000.”
The Ohaozara, Ebonyi State indigene said he did not take the callers serious, until he heard the distressed voice of his daughter, who told him they were indeed in Niger Republic and that the bus she boarded that day was owned by the kidnappers.
learnt that the victim’s father began to receive repeated calls from the kidnappers, who later asked him to deposit an initial sum of $30,000.
He said, “I told them to send me an account number, and they sent an Ecobank account number belonging to one Nwachukwu Daniel. I did not have the money they requested and I contacted the police for help, but I was asked to still exercise patience.
“After some weeks, they called again and I asked for another account number. They sent a Diamond Bank account number.
“They were using different international lines to call. They used about 15 different numbers to call us,” he added.
learnt that the police later decided to use a decoy to get some of the kidnappers arrested.
A police source said one of the female officers disguised as a girlfriend of one of the kidnappers and called one of the international lines.
After a few weeks of telephone conversations, the kidnapper-lover invited his lady to Niger Republic.
He said, “He sent someone to bring her and detectives trailed her and monitored their calls. They were able to arrest a suspect, who, however, denied knowing anything about the kidnapping, but said he sometimes overheard the victim’s father conversing with the ‘lover’.”
The matter was said to have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, when there was no further breakthrough in the case.
Our correspondent gathered that the police decided to work on the three account numbers sent to the victim’s family.
A source told PUNCH Metro that the numbers led the police to different states in the country.
He said, “It was discovered that one of the account numbers was opened at Idumota, Lagos State, and when the police got there, they were told the owner was in Niger Republic.
“Another account number led the police to Onitsha, Anambra State, and when they investigated, they discovered that the owner had earlier been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Onitsha and had been killed. The N200, 000 the victim’s father paid into the account was stuck because the suspect did not collect it before he died.”
Our correspondent was told that the police, however, arrested a sister of the suspect living in Aba, Abia State, who had been collecting money paid into a Diamond Bank account number opened in the state.
The girl was said to have admitted that the account belonged to her brother, who was sending money into it and giving her instructions on how the funds should be distributed among the family members.
A source said the girl had been arrested with two other suspects.
The victim’s father, Nwaigwe, said the matter had been referred to the Federal Criminal Investigation Department, Alagbon, Lagos.
It was learnt that the police had not been able to do anything due to lack of funds.
“The police have gone far on this case and needed funds to get those rogues arrested. There is still hope of getting the girl safe home,” a source said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said he would call back, but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

GURU POINTS: Married couples’ diverse sex signals

Married couples’ diverse sex signals

An illustration
Femi Daniel, 38, and Joke, 35, have been married for eight years, and have two children.
The couple have learnt to understand each other’s sexual nuances.
While Joke shyly communicates her sexual needs to Daniel when she is in the mood for sex, her husband employs a more direct approach.
Indeed to Daniel, sex is not just about having kids, it goes beyond that. “It’s a serious matter,” was how Daniel succinctly put it.
The couple have sex twice a week, on the average. Often, Daniel initiates it but when it’s Joke who wants sex, she never has to say it; Daniel reads the signs quite well.
“When my wife makes unnecessary noise at home, I know she’s in the mood for sex,” he said with a confident smile.
“If she’s putting a pot down, she does it in a way that it gets my attention. She becomes hyperactive and raises her voice just for me to take notice of her if I’m occupied with something else.”
Once Daniel gets her message, he wastes no further time to seize the initiative and take it from there.
“I simply hold her from behind and we take it from there. I understand that she uses that style because she’s shy,” Daniel said.
Meanwhile, for Daniel, his approach, should he be the one craving Joke’s attention, is to “mostly begin to tease her and tell her why she’s the best woman.”
“Once she notices that I want her, she quietly gets on the bed and awaits me,” Daniel added.
Talking about sex is still a taboo in many homes, including between married couples, in spite of being a common practice. Even in this modern age, some married couples cannot openly express their desire for sex with their partners lest they be seen as aggressive about sex.
Therefore, many couples have devised subtle ways of initiating sex, like the scenario described by Daniel, to avoid the risk of being regarded as immoral. This is because in some cases where people have reasons to regard their partners as such, doubts are raised and trust becomes difficult, particularly when conservative partners are involved.
Assertive men, subtle women
Findings by Saturday PUNCH show that men are usually the ones who initiate sex in marriages, as they tend to be more assertive than the women.
For instance, a banker, Helen Ogbuabor, spoke about an incident that almost ruined her best friend’s marriage of five years.
Her friend’s husband had been away for over six months on a study leave. Her friend, Uju, had planned to give her husband a special treat upon his return home.
“She went to him in their bedroom without any clothes on and started undoing the zip of his trousers, trying to show him how much she had missed him,” she recalled her friend’s account.
“But her husband got angry and started questioning her. He started asking her what she had been doing while he was away.”
On the other hand, Ogbuabor’s husband, Henry, is less conservative and therefore, more open to expressive emotions. Ogbuabor and Henry have established codes they use when they want sex.
Ogbuabor thanked her husband for the initiative since, according to her, the codes were coined by him.
“Since he’s also a banker, he can say ‘Honey, can I help you to balance the books later?’ I can reply by saying ‘I will appreciate the help, thank you,’” she said.
“I can also ask if he would help with my accounts and we will both understand that it’s about having sex and nothing to do with work.
“Also, sometimes I strip down to my bras and pants and walk around the bedroom to send him a message. My husband catches on quickly.”
Ogbuabor also said they sometimes use their codes in the presence of others, including their children and no one ever suspects their real intentions.
But according to Tope Ibrahim, he never gives any special thoughts to any moves as preambles to initiating sex with his wife. Spontaneity is the key word for the IT specialist.
He said he only needs to kiss or touch his wife seductively to get her in bed.
“Usually, that’s what my wife does too; she may touch me when we’re alone or grab my butts when I pass. If I’m watching the TV, she may switch it off and ask me to come to bed. That way, I know she wants me,” he said.
“But most times, we don’t think about it, it just happens.”
As for the Alabas, the husband is also more direct than the woman when initiating sex.
Akintunde Alaba, a civil servant, said he often initiates sex in their marriage. Alaba said his favourite moves are to ask his wife, Bimbo, for a hug or tell her he misses her, and then take it further from there.
“Sometimes, I also start touching her and she will know. We may then decide to go inside (the bedroom) from there,” Alaba said.
Although, there have been few occasions when Bimbo has had to initiate sex too in the relationship, but Alaba described them as “rare.”
Alaba continued: “I guess, she doesn’t really like to ask. When she does, it may be because we’ve not had sex for some time, so she might start accusing me of having joined men that deprive their wives of attention and their rights.
“Once she says that I will know and cooperate in good time. But usually, I don’t wait till my wife initiates sex. I’m a good husband, so she hardly needs to ask.”
Alaba also shared with our correspondent the method one of his friends employs to initiate sex at home.
“My pal told me he would just tell his wife ‘I’m going inside (the bedroom)’ or ‘meet me inside’ to tell her it’s showtime. But when I told my wife about it, she said she would never follow me if I tried that with her,” Alaba said, jokingly.
Indeed, many women may find the method being employed by Alaba’s friend in initiating sex with his wife as crude. However, there are also men who are subtle in that regard too.
A trader, Mrs. Celestina Ehikhuemen, said she can always tell when her husband, Paul, wants sex.
“He arrives home early from work and helps with the house chores. He may help with the dishes or suddenly starts doting on me,” she said.
“When he’s doing that, I don’t need to be told that he wants something.”
‘I will host you tonight’
Mr. Gbolahan Joseph’s wife, Dunmola, is shy; she never openly tells her husband she wants sex but he knows all the same when she’s in the mood for some lovemaking.
Joseph, a marketing executive, said his busy lifestyle sometimes prevents him from getting intimate with his wife. But once it’s getting too long for Dunmola to bear, she takes the initiative.
‘’Sometimes, we’re so busy and don’t have time for each other. After a while, it gets to her and she will say ‘Baby, I will host you tonight’. On such nights, by the time I return from work, she would have prepared my meal and got a bottle of wine ready for me because she knows I drink.
“It also happens when I buy gifts she really appreciates; she might also say she would host me at night. Of course, we both know what will happen after the meal.”
Sexting your partner
For couples sleeping in separate rooms, the situation is more interesting. The partner who is initiating sex may employ the use of social media to pass the message across.
Before the advent of the social media, it was common to hear about partners leaving love notes in their spouse’s clothes, which some couples still do, irrespective of new technologies. Some couples still find passing notes and wearing sexy lingeries perfect to spark up their sex lives.
Nancy Osuji, 39, who sleeps in a separate room from her husband, Johnson, 41, has been using text messages to communicate her sexual moods.
Anytime Osuji is in the mood for lovemaking, she would text her husband to let him know that his attention is needed in her room.
She said, “I start with a text message that says ‘baby, are you sleeping in my room tonight?’ I don’t know how to say ‘come and make love to me or whatever,’ so I just say ‘come and sleep in my room.’
“My husband jokes a lot, so he will say ‘no.’ I will send another message, ‘Why now? Come and sleep in my room.’ He will now say: ‘Put it in writing.’ I may wait and wait for him and he will not come. I may send a Blackberry message, saying ‘are you still coming?’ and he will say: ‘I said put it in writing.’
Most times, he’s the one who initiates it and he doesn’t need any preamble. He just enters my room. He will come to my bed and hold me. He doesn’t have to tell me that he wants to make love to me or whatever. Although, we don’t sleep in the same room, I don’t lock my door. He’s free to open the door at any time.
“Sometimes, when I tell him to come and sleep in my room, he may reply that he’d think about it. At times, he sleeps off and doesn’t bother to come. And at times, he comes.”
Sometimes, Nancy is also forced to go to Johnson’s room.
She continued, “When I have serious urge, I go to his room to sleep and return to my room.”
The couple have been sleeping in separate rooms since they got married about a decade ago. While Nancy loves cold weather and enjoys putting on the air conditioner at night, Johnson is prone to catching a cold and so, prefers warm weather.
Since the couple could not reach a compromise on the right temperature, they chose to sleep in separate rooms.
“So when I go to his room, I still return to my room later because I can’t cope with the heat in his room unless the weather is cold, which is not always the case,” she said.
“When I go to his room, he may say, ‘What is it? I don’t want to do. Go to your room. Leave me alone, abeg.’ He will joke about it and make fun of me. I will also joke and say ‘what is wrong with you?’”
Sleeping in separate rooms however seems to affect intimacy between married couples.
Osuji, who agreed with the assertion, said, “Had it been that we were sleeping in the same room and I was touching him, it would happen often. Then we have to consider the stress of moving from one room to the other, especially since our rooms are not adjacent to each other. He will need to take 15-20 steps to get to my room.”
But in spite of the stress of moving from one room to another, some people have argued in favour of couples sleeping in separate rooms.
A 70-year-old businessman, Joshua Olubanjo, who slept in a separate room from his late wife for over 40 years, said it would give partners some privacy in marriage.
“It means partners can retire to their own private space at night,” he said. “It’s also good for the man or woman whose partner keeps too many times around.”
On how he and his late wife initiated sex in the period they were together in the absence of mobile phones, Olubanjo said: “I would ask her to come over to my room or she would come herself.
“There were times we would share a room for a few days, and we would eventually return to status quo after the few days.”
Ijeoma Ajibola, a marriage counsellor and President of Home Menders International, which hosts a monthly forum for couples, said it doesn’t matter what ways couples use in communicating their sexual needs as long as they work well for both parties.
“I think it is safe to say the end justifies the means,” she said.
Speaking further, Ajibola said most women tend to be conservative in expressing their sexual needs to their spouses because of their upbringing, adding that married couples ought to sleep in the same room for enriched intimacy.
She said, “Many women were raised under very strict and conservative ways, with the belief system that women are to be seen and not heard and that it is a man’s responsibility to make every move. Some women don’t want to be seen as ‘prostitutes’.
“Also, some women are shy and find it difficult to speak up, though this isn’t a good excuse not to initiate sex because in marriage, we are supposed to be naked and unashamed. Most husbands I have spoken to say they appreciate it a lot when their wives initiate sex.
“It is absolutely wrong for couples to sleep in separate beds or bedrooms. The aim of intimacy, which is oneness is defeated. If you are married and you still ‘need your space’, which is the reason some couples give for staying in separate rooms, then you have no business getting married.”
A marriage counsellor and family life coach, Pastor Bisi Adewale, blamed tradition and religion for some of the reasons why some married women are shy about revealing their sexuality to their spouses.
“When people are single, religion tells them that sex is bad, but nobody tells them when they are getting married that sex is now good, and that they can enjoy it, talk about it and play about it. They go into the marriage with the traditions coupled with religious bigotry.
“A woman once said she was told by her mother that women should not enjoy sex, that it’s for the men. She also told her that even if she enjoys it, she’s should pretend otherwise so that the man will not think she’s wayward. So the tradition puts a curtain around bedroom live, even among couples.”
In addition, Adewale warned couples against sleeping in separate rooms, describing it as bad for marriages.
He said, “Sleeping together helps intimacy and love between spouses. It also helps them to solve their misunderstandings. I’ve seen a situation where a man died in his separate room; his door was locked. He struggled to get to the door and was only able to hold the door handle. He died there. If he was sleeping in the same room with his wife, maybe it could have saved his life.
“When spouses sleep together, they hold hands and talk into the night. They can be intimate and it’s not just about sex. We discovered that couples that sleep in the same room have more sex than those staying in separate rooms; they also sort out their quarrels easily. They are able to forgive each other and settle conflicts easily. Some people will say ‘my husband snores’, but such things are immaterial.”

Guru Points: APC alleges fresh plot to scuttle Feb elections

APC alleges fresh plot to scuttle Feb elections

The All Progressives Congress has said it has uncovered a fresh plot by those it called anti-democratic forces to use the courts to postpone or scuttle next month’s general elections.
APC called on the judiciary to protect the nation’s democracy, urging Nigerians to “repudiate the desperadoes” and their allies who are behind the plot.
In a statement in Lagos on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC said after the efforts to stop its presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), failed, those the party described as anarchists had perfected plans to “use the courts to stop the elections at all cost.”
It alleged that the case instituted at a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, seeking a declaration that Gen. Buhari lacked the requisite qualification to contest the February 14 presidential election, was the first in a series of court cases to be instituted to stop the polls.
”We are not surprised at this, because these desperadoes are so predictable. They are following the footsteps of the infamous Association for Better Nigeria, which helped to annul the 1993 elections and which threw Nigeria into a crisis from which it has yet to fully recover, over 20 years later.
”We can only appeal to the judiciary not to become a willing tool in the hands of those who will stop at nothing to scuttle the elections, just to perpetuate their firm grip on power,” APC said.
The party argued that President Goodluck Jonathan was afraid that if the elections would hold as scheduled, he would lose to Buhari by a wide margin.
APC said, “An ally of presidential aide Doyin Okupe has revealed that President Jonathan will rather have the military take over than hand over to the APC candidate. Though Okupe has made a tepid denial, the revelation has exposed the thinking and the desperation within the Presidency, ahead of the elections.
“We are also aware that up till this moment, the President has yet to repudiate the ex-militants in the Niger Delta, who have threatened the country’s very existence if he(Jonathan) is not re-elected, as if elections are won by fiat.
“When this is added to ongoing moves to depopulate the North-east, which is an opposition stronghold, using scare tactics, one can see that this presidency and the PDP are as terrified and desperate as they can be.”

Aussie Open: Djokovic, Wawrinka hit q/finals

Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic powered into his eighth consecutive quarter-final at the Australian Open as Stan Wawrinka kept his title defence on track on Monday, AFP reports.
The Serb world number one was too strong for unseeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, winning 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 in the night match on Rod Laver Arena.
The four-time champion did not have his service broken as he powered through to play Canada’s Milos Raonic for a place in the semi-finals.
Djokovic was outstanding on service, winning a high 82 per cent of first serves and fighting off four break points.
The Serb top seed hit 47 winners and only 16 unforced errors in a masterly performance against the left-handed Muller.
“I got the crucial three breaks at the important moments, especially in the second and third at 5-all, managed to play some good passing shots,” Djokovic said.
Raonic became the first Canadian man to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals in 47 years in a five-set battle with Feliciano Lopez.
The eighth seed thundered down 30 aces as he made the last eight with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7/9) 6-3 win over the 12th-seed in 3hr5min on Hisense Arena.
Raonic created Canadian tennis history by becoming the first man since Michael Belkin in 1968 to win through to the quarters at the Australian Open.
He also equalled countryman Robert Powell’s feat of playing in three Grand Slam quarter-finals set back at the 1908, 1910 and 1912 Wimbledons.
“It’s great to be doing what I’m doing and that it is making a difference,” Raonic said.
“It is, I guess, part of some history, if you look really deep. But at the end of the day, at the same time, I’m always pushing myself for what I want to achieve.”

Was 'The Lion King' Copied From A Japanese Cartoon? Here's The Real Story

Was 'The Lion King' Copied From A Japanese Cartoon? Here's The Real Story

Ever since "The Lion King" debuted a little more than 20 years ago, everything the light touches has been its kingdom. The movie is one of the most cherished Disney films of all time, it was turned into the most successful musical ever and its soundtrack was Disney's most decorated until "Frozen" came along. (Just let it go, "Lion King" fans.)
But despite its massive success, a huge controversy has always dogged the film: "Kimba, the White Lion."
"I can say there is absolutely no inspiration from 'Kimba,'" animator Tom Sito told HuffPost Entertainment. Sito's resume includes classic Disney films such as "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin" and, of course, "The Lion King," to name a few. "I mean the artists working on the film, if they grew up in the '60s, they probably saw 'Kimba.' I mean, I watched 'Kimba' when I was a kid in the '60s, and I think in the recesses of my memory we’re aware of it, but I don’t think anybody consciously thought, 'Let’s rip off 'Kimba.'"

The "Kimba" Controversy

Following animated classics like "The Little Mermaid" (1989), "Beauty and the Beast," (1991) and "Aladdin" (1992), "The Lion King" was billed as Disney's first big animated feature that wasn't a retelling of a fairytale or previous story. And while the film took a lot of inspiration from Shakespeare's "Hamlet," its originality was still praised by critics and audiences.
Not everyone was impressed, though.

After the movie's release, many were shocked by its similarities to a Japanese-created American television cartoon series called "Kimba, the White Lion." That cartoon, about African wildlife, began airing in the 1960s and was based off of a Manga comic called "Jungle Emperor Leo" by animator Osamu Tezuka.
Disney and the filmmakers quickly denied any influence.
The company's stance was that those involved with the film had no knowledge of "Kimba" or Tezuka. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, "The Lion King" co-director Rob Minkoff said, "Frankly, I'm not familiar with [the TV series]," in reference to the controversy. He also added that he and co-director Roger Allers first learned about the debate on a trip to Japan to promote the movie.
But as author Madhavi Sunder pointed out, Allers actually worked as an animator in Japan in the 1980s, a place where "Jungle Emperor" was widely seen, and its creator, Tezuka, is known as Japan's Walt Disney.

In a recent interview with Fumettologica, Allers said, "I could certainly understand Kimba’s creators feeling angry if they felt we had stolen ideas from them. If I had been inspired by 'Kimba' I would certainly acknowledge my inspiration."
Minkoff and Allers did not respond to requests for further comment from HuffPost Entertainment.
Disney's denial of any influence inspired petitions and protests from animators and fans alike who believed "Kimba" should have been acknowledged. Well-known Japanese cartoonist Machiko Satonaka, who says she was told by the company that "Disney has never heard of 'Jungle Emperor' or 'Kimba, the White Lion,'" wrote an open letter to the studio that was signed by hundreds of animation professionals. "The Simpsons" even parodied the controversy in a 1995 episode by having a lion appear in the clouds to say, "You must avenge my death, Kimba … I mean, Simba.”

But did these protesters really have a case? The past can hurt, but you can either run from it or learn from it.

The Similarities

Though Disney seems to hold one firm opinion on the Simba vs. Kimba debate, actor Matthew Broderick -- who voiced Simba -- admitted he was initially confused about his role. "I thought he meant Kimba, who was a white lion in a cartoon when I was a little kid," Broderick had said in a 1994 interview about his casting.
And while the projects differ in their storylines -- with the Japanese cartoon exploring the relationship between humans and animals -- there are some visual similarities between the two.

From the epic vision of a lion standing atop Pride Rock to the unforgettable appearance of Mufasa in the clouds, "The Lion King" does appear to mirror "Kimba" at certain points.

Many also reference similarities in the characters as proof of a connection. In addition to the main characters having extremely similar names -- Kimba and Simba, respectively (Kimba is known as Leo in "Jungle Emperor") -- there is also a sage baboon, bumbling hyenas, a young lioness love-interest, a Zazu-like bird and an evil lion with an eye ailment. His name is Claw.

The Real Story

In an interview with HuffPost Entertainment, Sito said "Kimba" did not serve as source material for the film. But his comments confirm that at least some people working on the project had seen the cartoons and comics before, which is contrary to the initial reported corporate stance that the filmmakers were unaware of "Kimba" or Tezuka. (In a 1994 interview, Minkoff did not rule out the possibility that Tezuka was discussed in the years prior to his arrival on the project.)

Sito says when filmmakers first learned about similarities between the projects, it was already late in the production process, with more than half the film having been completed.
"One of the animators found a Manga comic book of Kimba’s with a setup that kind of looked like Pride Rock, and I remember he was like showing it to us, and I was like, 'Wow, that is really close to ours, yeah.' But I think it was never more than an amusing coincidence," said Sito.
Other filmmakers on the project confirm Sito's comments. In a 1997, Mark Kausler, who has a story credit on the film, told author Fred Patten that he had watched "Kimba" as a kid, but during the production process the animators were focused on creating a story that was more like "Bambi" set in Africa without the "animals versus man" theme:
Nobody ever mentioned "Kimba," and if any of us who knew of it thought about it, I guess we figured that since "Kimba" was always about the animals trying to get the humans to accept them as equals, the absence of humans in "The Lion King" made it obviously a different plot.
In regard to "Bambi" serving as a template for "Lion King," Sito said, "I think we were trying to achieve the same naturalism in the acting as 'Bambi.' The animals don't walk around on two legs, and wear gloves with three lines on them. The art directors were also inspired by the color palate [as the] 'Bambi' art director Tyrus Wong. Taking into account the vastly different setting of course, 'Lion King' is in African savannah while 'Bambi' is set in a North American indigenous forrest."
Though "The Lion King" wasn't developed with "Kimba" in mind, the similarities are evident. In his book Watching Anime, Reading Manga: 25 Years of Essays and Reviews, Patten cites an interview with "Lion King" animator Sadao Miyamoto, in which he told Bridge U.S.A. that he was "taken aback" when he first saw storyboards because of their likeness to Tezuka's work and that there must've been at least some influence.

Sito explained that wasn't necessarily the case. "Honestly, I think it’s seriously coincidence," the animator said. "You know I’m not a spokesman for Disney, but I was there during all the story development and nobody consciously thought [about] that. I think when you do the kind of things that lions do, the grasslands and the kind of environment they’re in, and the type of props they would work with, trees and rocks and the other animals, I think some similarities are inevitable." (For those wondering, Simba is reportedly the Swahili word for lion, which would explain the name similarities.)
Disney did not respond to requests for comment.
Back in 1994, Takayuki Matsutani, the president of Osamu Tezuka's production company, Tezuka Productions, agreed with what Sito said today:
Quite a few staff of our company saw a preview of "The Lion King," discussed this subject and came to the conclusion that you cannot avoid having these similarities as long as you use animals as characters and try to draw images out of them.
Matsutani continued saying that if Tezuka had thought Disney "got a hint" of "Lion King" from his work, he would have been pleased.

In the end, it all comes full circle.

Even with its similarities to "The Lion King," Tezuka's work has clear differences. "Kimba is much more exotic. You know, Kimba gets up on two feet and punches other animals in the mouth, gives them a knuckle sandwich, you know, and our lions don’t really do that," Sito noted.
In addition to "Kimba" having more fantastical plots and anthropomorphic traits in the characters, the biggest contrast between the two projects is without a doubt the relationship between animals and humans, which stems from the original inspiration for "Kimba": Walt Disney's "Bambi."

Tezuka died in 1989, but during his life he didn't bother hiding his affection for Disney, especially his love for "Bambi," claiming to have seen the film more than 100 times. The animator actually met Walt Disney during a World's Fair before he ended up licensing "Bambi" for a Japanese adaptation and credits Disney in his autobiography for some creative influence. In his book, From Goods to a Good Life: Intellectual Property and Global Justice, Sunder points out that Tezuka said his own work on "Jungle Emperor," aka "Kimba," was an homage and a critique of the film.
Despite all the controversy surrounding "The Lion King" with regard to "Kimba," both works have stood the test of time and hold an important place in the hearts of fans. With the news that each simply focuses on similar subject matter and drew varying inspiration Disney's "Bambi," it's easy to see how some similarities, as Sito says, are "almost inevitable."
In the end, it appears this case may just come down to a little thing called the circle of life.

Tom DeLonge Says He 'Never Quit' Blink-182, Band Calls Him 'Ungrateful'

Tom DeLonge Says He 'Never Quit' Blink-182, Band Calls Him 'Ungrateful'

Tom DeLonge posted that he "never quit" Blink-182, despite the earlier reports.
To all the fans, I never quit the band. I actually was on a phone call about a blink 182 event for New York City at the time all these weird press releases started coming in... Apparently those releases were 'sanctioned' from the band. Are we dysfunctional- yes. But, Christ..... ‪#‎Awkward‬ ‪#‎BabyBackRibs‬
In an interview with Rolling Stone, however, band members Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus said DeLonge is "out" of the band, according to his manager. Said Barker:
It's hard to cover for someone who's disrespectful and ungrateful. You don't even have the balls to call your bandmates and tell them you're not going to record or do anything Blink-related. You have your manager do it. Everyone should know what the story is with him and it's been years with it. When we did get back together after my plane crash, we only got back together, I don't know, maybe because I almost died. But he didn't even listen to mixes or masterings from that record. He didn't even care about it. Why Blink even got back together in the first place is questionable.
Hoppus said he and Barker stand behind their press release "100 percent because it's all true." Read the full interview with Rolling Stone here.
EARLIER: As first reported by Radio.com, Blink-182's Tom DeLonge has "indefinitely" left the band. DeLonge has apparently made this decision in order to pursue his "other non-musical endeavors," a representative for Blink-182 said in a statement. He'll be replaced by Matt Skiba of the Alkaline Trio at the group's upcoming performance at Travis Barker's eighth annual Musink Music and Tattoo Festival. Read the full release below.
Matt Skiba of the Alkaline Trio will join Blink-182 in replacement of Tom DeLonge at the 8th annual Musink Music and Tattoo Festival. “We were all set to play this festival and record a new album and Tom kept putting it off without reason. A week before we were scheduled to go in to the studio we got an email from his manager explaining that he didn’t want to participate in any Blink-182 projects indefinitely, but would rather work on his other non-musical endeavors.” Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus plan to honor all Blink-182 commitments including the Musink Festival and are excited to have singer/guitarist Matt Skiba join them for this project. “No hard feelings, but the show must go on for our fans.” Additionally, Skiba will continue to make new music and tour with the Alkaline Trio.
In August, Blink member Mark Hoppus revealed in an interview that band was ready to record to their next album and intended to head into the studio at the end of 2014. “We have the beginning of song ideas at this point, and we are really just excited to get into the studio and have an album out sooner rather than later," Hoppus said. There's no word on how DeLonge's departure will affect the plans for the new album.

GURU POINTS: Miss Universe 2014 Winner Is Colombia's Paulina Vega

Miss Universe 2014 Winner Is Colombia's Paulina Vega

Miss USA Nia Sanchez and contestants from more than 80 other countries.
At Sunday's pageant in Miami, Vega, a 22-year-old student of business administration from Barranquilla, Colombia, said she would wear the crown with "pride and excitement" as she heard the news that fans in Colombia had taken to the streets to celebrate.
Although she was far from home, Vega said she still felt the support from local Latinos.
"It felt like home. I felt like I was in Colombia with my people. I felt that support in every moment of the pageant," she said, wearing a sparkling silver gown with vertical stripes at a news conference after the competition.
Real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump, who owns the pageant, said many predicted Vega would take the crown a few weeks ago when contestants first arrived in Miami for the festivities.
"From the minute she walked in the building, people said, 'She's a star,'" Trump said.
Trump said Colombia was in the running to host next year's pageant but noted China was also a strong candidate.
Vega's win keeps the title in the hands of another Latina — reigning Miss Universe Gabriela Isler is from Venezuela. Beauty pageants are big business in Latin America, where girls are groomed for the contests from a young age and where Vega said women find "a lot of pride" in representing their country.
Crowd favorite Miss Venezuela Migbelis Lynette Castellanos was cut after the top ten. She had tremendous support and pressure locally and back home. The Miami suburb of Doral, which was host to the women during their stay, is also known as "Doralzuela" for its many Venezuelan residents.
Pageants and performance run in Vega's family. Her grandmother, Elvira Castillo, was Miss Atlántico 1953 (Colombia) and her grandfather is legendary tenor Gastón Vega.
But the contests leading up to Miss Universe were a first for Vega, who is one of eight children. She also said they would be her last, as she is eager to return to her business studies, saying: "It gives me independence. I want to have my own company."
After Sanchez, the 24-year-old Miss USA from Las Vegas, Nevada, the second runner-up was Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha. Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell and Miss Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen were also among the top five, emerging from the field of 88 contestants.
Fennell stood out with her short, spiky haircut and feisty personality.
"I don't have long tresses like everyone else. I'm just representing myself, and that's what beauty pageants are all about," said Fennell, who wore a long, red beaded evening gown. "You don't have to look a certain way ... and I feel like I represent that."
As Miss Universe, Vega will receive an undisclosed salary, a luxury apartment in New York, a wardrobe and oodles of beauty products, and a one-year scholarship from the New York Film Academy.
"It will be a dream come true to represent the woman of today," Vega said earlier in the week. "A woman that not only cares about being beautiful and being glamorous, but also cares about being a professional, intelligent, hard-working person."

GURU POINT: Makeup Displays Are Here To Address Your Organizing Problems

We've seen DIY makeup organizers made from the likes of Pinterest and Etsy, but we never thought we'd see the day when Legos would become the beauty solution we never knew we needed.
Enter these Lego makeup displays, which make us want to toss those plastic stacking shelves out the window.

Canadian-based musician and multimedia artist Annabelle Rioux was inspired to create her own makeup organizers after years of being dissatisfied with beauty organizers on the mainstream market. "I'd been searching for original and handy displays to store my makeup," she says, adding that she "was looking for more; something different."

She considered using wood at first, but dropped the idea after a trip to her mom's basement, where she found some leftover Legos from her childhood. "I remember enjoying two things [from] my childhood: playing music and playing with Legos," she says.

Rediscovering her passion, the artist transformed the basic blocks into makeup organizers that were "cute, solid, original and symmetric," she says.
Rioux has big plans for the future of her designs. "Recently I went to the Lego store and I can assure you that there will be a day when I start a new Lego universe and ... it will be huge!"
Ah, we can't wait to see!
